15 Years Ago...

....I married my Sweetheart, my Best Friend and my Soul Mate! It's amazing how fast time flies! It seems like just yesterday that I was sitting in Sunday School in the Singles Ward (only my 3rd time there...and I'm "without friend" this time...aaahhh gasp...heaven forbid I have to sit "without friend")...when I felt a tap on my shoulder...

...and thus the story goes...

Following the tap on my shoulder, a piece of paper is passed to me from some "unknown boy" behind me. The note said, "read 1 Corinthians 11:15 and give me your opinion."
  • 1 Cor. 11: 15: "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering."

I'm thinking..."what the...???!!!" (Mind you I did have extremely long hair at the time...but still...). I turned around and looked at the 3 guys behind me and said, "who wrote this?" Trent grinned and raised his hand.

So, after reading it, I'm just sitting there...stunned, speechless...and I feel the "tap" again. This time all I see over my shoulder is his hand (he wants the paper back). So, I pass the paper back and then comes the "tap" again...on the paper the first line is scribbled out and next is written;

"Ephesians 5:22!" (note the !...that was written just like I've shown)

So...I look it up...
Eph. 5: 22: Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. (Remember this one had the !)

Ok...so I read this one over and over...wondering "what kind of answer does this guy want from me...

Growing impatient, he asks for the paper back and writes the following and gives it back to me telling me that he'd "give me some time to go home and read them". As I'm walking to my car afterwards he's behind me saying "read those because I want a report next week!" (Needless to say...I didn't go the next week :)

"Proverbs 18:22"

"2 Nephi 2:25"
"Ecclesiatstes 3:4...last part"
So...I go home and look them up...

  • Prov. 18: A fool’s mouth is his destruction—Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing—A man that hath friends must show himself friendly.
  • 2 Ne. 2: 25: Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy
  • Eccl. 3: 4: last part ...and a time to dance;
(yep...I kept the note)

By now, I've involved my mom, asking her if she thinks it's a pick up. (Hindsight...15 years later...uuhhh duh trace...of course it's a pick up!) Anyway, because I didn't even know his name, he was referred to as the scripture boy at my house for the next couple of weeks!

When I finally go back to the Singles Ward 2 weeks later, "scripture boy" comes and sits next to me in Sunday School. I was wearing a denim mini skirt with a turquoise blouse and turquoise slouch socks (remember...this was 1993). He asks me if I always match my socks to my shirt. I look at him and he's wearing a pink (...remember 1993...) Polo shirt with dockers and yes...pink Polo brand socks that matched his shirt!!!! Following Sunday School he asked me if I wanted to go to the fireside that night. I said sure..."I'll meet you there." I later found out that this response crushed him :(

Two weeks later was a BBQ and swim activity for the Singles Ward. I just knew that he'd be there (yes, I finally knew his name!) so I did my hair just right and changed my outfit 10 times. The whole BBQ he ignored me...he was playing football with his buddies and no matter what I did, he wouldn't look at me. After eating we went to the Kearn's High Swimming pool. The singles ward had rented out the pool for the activity. I knew this was my last chance to get his attention, so I secluded myself in a corner of the pool and looked lonely. (hindsight...why couldn't we "teenagers" just talk to each other...why the games???) Sure enough, Trent picked me up (literally) and carried me through the pool. On our second lap, he asked me, "so when are are going to go out?" To which I replied, "when are you going to ask me?"

5 months later we were engaged. Although getting him to ask me to marry him seemed just as hard as it was to get him to notice me that night at the BBQ...we walked around Temple Square for 45 minutes while Trent sweated it out and finally got down on one knee!

And 3 months after that, we were married on a beautiful January day! The sun was shining and it was actually somewhat warm!

So, 15 years later, we've bought 3 homes (2 of which we built), struggled through 6 years of infertility, witnessed and lived "the miracle of adoption" (and were lucky enough to do it twice!), watched our son struggle with health problems and a speech disability...and I think that after all that, we are more in love than ever before! Our struggles and our triumphs have made us stronger as a couple. I always joke that our marriage survived infertility...therefore we can survive anything!

We have two beautiful, sweet, loving children, who mean the world to us!

Yes, I guess you could say that WE HAVE IT ALL!

That is awesome. What a good memory. And I'm sorry that you had to do it all the 90s - there's just no excuse for the fashion trends then :o)

Knowing Trent none of that surprises me. Can we call Trent scripture boy? Being engaged after 5 Months. I don't think you had to work that hard to get Trent to ask you, 45 minutes is nothing.

Tracy,
I love reading about beginning of relationships especially when they keep on getting better. Thanks for putting this up. I think I am going to call Trent "Scripture Boy." That is too funny. You were brave to go back! Like I said to Trent ... marrying you was the best decision he ever made! Love you!
