What a Day!

If you read my post from a few weeks ago, you'll remember that Carson needed to have five teeth pulled. Well, today was the day. We talked to him a little bit about it last night, told him that Dr. Roth was going to help a few of his baby teeth out, and reminded him that he wouldn't be able to eat or drink anything until after his appointment. When we said his prayer, we mentioned his procedure and blessed him not to be scared. After prayer, he told me that he wasn't scared.

This morning, after dropping Karlee off at Holly's house at 8:00, Carson and I traveled into Tooele to Dr. Roth's office. Carson was very mad at me (and the world) because he wanted breakfast. When we arrived at his appointment, he told me that he wasn't getting out of the van. He finally did, after I told him that I guess I would send Dr. Roth out to get him :).

They immediately got his weight and gave him his medicine (oral sedation). He's had oral sedation once before, but today they used something a little different. They then had us sit in the waiting room and wait for the medicine to take effect. This typically takes about 30 minutes.

After 20 minutes, things started getting crazy! To set the scene for you, the office was decorated for Halloween with spiders, pumpkins and fake spider webs strung on the artwork. Carson was starting to get loopy, so I was trying to get him to stay on my lap. This is how the conversation went:
Me: "Can I rub your back?"
Carson: "NO! It feels like spider webs"
Me: "what?"
Carson: "Spider webs"
(I'm thinking...ok...")
Me: "Dude (our nickname for him)...you sound drunk"
Carson: (while covering my mouth with his hand) "shhhh...don't tell daddy!"
Next conversation:
Me: "how you doing?"
Carson: (circling around his face with his hand) "I am getting dizzy". "My brain is going 'round and 'round."
He then hears Dr. Roth talking back in the reception/office area so he decides he wants to talk to him. So, while laying on my lap, he starts shouting "Dr. Roth, Dr. Roth, Dr. Roth, Dr. Roth?" I'm trying to shush him and he says to me, "where is Dr. Roth...I love him." And then he looks up at the picture hanging on the wall above my head and proceeds to grab my head while saying, "mom, move your head before the spider web gets you."
All the while, he speech is getting more and more slurred. The other mom in the waiting room is trying her hardest not to laugh...not to mention ME trying not to laugh! I give him a pen and some paper so that he can draw (hoping to quiet him down), but after a few tries, I realize that he can't keep the pen in his hand. Dr. Roth comes out and says that the medicine worked fast this time, that it usually takes 1/2 hour. He then asks Carson if he's ready to come back. Carson tries to stand up, but can't so Dr. Roth carries him back.
Ok, so that part of the post probably has you all laughing...but I will have you crying by the end...I promise!
35 minutes later, he is done. 5 teeth extracted. The assistant comes out to tell me and give me some gauze and his teeth. Carson is with Dr. Roth at the prize bin trying to pick out a prize, but he is crying too hard saying he doesn't know what he wants. (He knew last night what he was going to pick out of the prize bin). The Dr. tells me that the medication will make him out of sorts and emotional for awhile. He doesn't want to keep the gauze in his mouth, and the Dr. is telling him that he needs to bite down on it to stop the bleeding. The Dr. is trying to talk to me and help Carson feel better at the same time. Finally, I ask Carson if he just wants to go home...he cries "Yes". It is just so sad because you can just tell that he is out of sorts.
He falls asleep on the way home. Once we get home, I'm trying to get him out of the van and he starts throwing up. (thank goodness we're not in the house yet). Once I get him inside, I call the Dr. and ask about the vomiting. He tells me that it is more than likely caused by Carson swallowing blood (because he won't bite on the gauze). He tells me to slowly, very slowly give him water and to call him if it continues. It is about 10:15 am. Carson throws up a few more times. I finally get this strong feeling, so I call my friend, Carolyn. I ask her if she knows anyone in the ward who would be home in the middle of the day (our ward just split and I don't know many of the new people yet...but I do know that we have quite a few older couples and that there are probably some priesthood holders who are retired.) I tell her that I'd like Carson to have a blessing. I try to call a few people and am unable to reach anyone. About 1/2 hour later, Carson is sleeping in my lap and I start thinking that he is past the worst part. Then, he wakes up and starts throwing up again. He looks at me and very quietly says, "mom, I need a blessing." I tell him I know and then I proceed to call one particular ward member again...still not home. I look at my little boy and just know that I need to do something. So, I call my father in law, who lives in West Valley. He says that he will round up another "retiree" in his ward and be out as soon as he can. I tell Carson that grandpa's coming. 45 minutes later, Grandpa and his friend show up and give Carson a beautiful blessing, meant totally for him. They bless him that he will be able to run and play again soon. (Those who know Carson, know that almost nothing slows him down!). I am near tears as I walk them out. 10 minutes later Carson askes me for oatmeal, tells me he is feeling better and asks if he can go play (typical Carson). I tell him that I'm glad that he's feeling better, but no, he can't play, he needs to take it easy. A little while later, he tells me he's feeling yucky again and that he needs another blessing. I tell him that Grandpa went home, but that him and I can say a prayer. Ok...he's satisfied. I don't think he felt yucky again, I really think that he loved the feeling of the blessing and just wanted another one.
He has been asleep for the last two hours. Two hours that I've had to reflect on the faith and spirit of this precious little boy. This boy who is such a blessing in our lives! This little boy, who, one year ago couldn't say a simple sentence, who is so strong, has overcome the odds, and today told me that he needed a blessing. Wow!!! How grateful I am for families, for our children, our neighbors, the priesthood, friends and primary teachers who daily teach my children about faith and Heavenly Father. I've had a little taste of Heaven today. A day that I basically accomplished "nothing" as far as the world is concerned...a day that I sat and held my 6 year old in my lap all day while watching Zaboomafoo and Scooby Doo. A day that I will never forget!
On a side note, can I just say that Dr. Roth is wonderful!!!
Also, in Trent's defense...I was unable to reach him at work today. He works for EG&G, a government contractor that has the contract for the chemical weapons disposal. He works in a highly classified and secure area. Even if I could have gotten a hold of him, it would've taken him at least an hour to get to his car, get through security and make the drive home.

Okay, Trace, I'm bawling all over our laptop right now...what a sweet boy Carson is. And what a humbling experience for you both. Your and Carson's conversation before his procedure cracked me up! By the way, thanks so much again for helping me with my artscow book...I got it to work and it's ordered now. Can't wait to get it! :)

Tracy, what an ordeal from funny to sad and worried.
Don't you just love the priesthood, hopefully he won't remember the experience at the office, but remembers the prayers and his grandpa coming to bless him.

What a day for both of you. Any one that says you did nothing that day should get popped in the kisser. You grow your faith and your sons. I can't think of anything better to do in a day.
