November is National Adoption Month!

November is National Adoption Month! It is a time when case workers, adoptive families, hopeful adoptive parents and families touched by adoption strive to raise awareness about adoption and the miracle that it is. I figured that in celebration of this special month, I would post a few of my thoughts on adoption.

  • Also, this Saturday is the Utah Adoption Celebration at Boondocks (see flier below). Everyone is invited! It is always a fun time. Profiles and photos of waiting children in Utah will be available. Staff from both Utah's Division of Child and Family Services as well as The Adoption Exchange will be available to answer questions. As I try to put together my thoughts, I find that it is just easier to go back 9 years and let you relive it with me. So, below is an exerpt from my journal about the day Karlee was born as well as the 2 days that followed! Just a little FYI for when you're reading it: Christy is Karlee's birthmother, Henry was our Case Worker, Lynette was Christy's case worker and Devin and Kathy are Trent's brother and his wife...

On Sunday, October 10 we got a call from Henry at about 7:30 p.m. telling us that Christy was in labor! We were so excited that we started calling all of our families and telling them the good news and asking them to pray for Christy and little Karlee. At 11:00 p.m. Henry called us back to tell us that Karlee was here and she was perfect! She was born at 10:24 and was 7 lbs. 3 oz and 19 inches long! We were so happy we just cried! We had waited so long for this. At the same time I was also extremely thoughtful of Christy and hoped that she was doing ok!

Well, needless to say, the next day was crazy! Henry called Trent in the morning and said that placement would probably take place Wednesday morning and that he would keep us informed! By 4:00 p.m. when I was leaving work, Trent called me on my cell phone to say that placement would take place Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m.! That was 28 hours away!!!!! WOW!!! It was finally here. Henry also said that we needed to go into his office Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 to have a conference call with Christy in the hospital! I was so excited that Christy wanted to talk to us again.

...we had a wonderful conversation with Christy and her mom where she told us how beautiful little Karlee was!

On the way home from Henry’s office, we decided that we should ask Devin & Kathy to be with us that night for placement. Kathy was so touched that she cried. Needless to say they accepted. The plan was for Devin to run the camcorder and for Kathy to take pictures.

Before placement, we went to Red Robin for dinner. We were so excited and nervous that we could barely eat. Finally it was time to go up to Henry’s office. Devin & Kathy were to meet us there. We arrived at about 7:50 p.m. Henry and Lynette were waiting for us. Henry had us start signing some papers while we waited for Devin & Kathy. They arrived at about 8:10. Once they arrived, Henry & Lynette asked us if we were ready…Of Course We Are Ready!!!! Lynette then went into the back room, which is apparently a nursery and brought in Karlee. I will never forget the moment she opened the door to Henry’s office with our little Karlee in her arms! Trent and I were just sobbing…and at the same time I was holding out my arms for my Karlee. Lynette placed her in my arms and oh what a beautiful little girl. At that moment everything I had gone through with my struggle with infertility was worth it! This little girl in my arms was what it was all about. We loved her instantly! I then handed her to Trent…at the moment he took her in her arms; she opened her eyes and looked right at him! It was incredible! All the while, Devin was recording and Kathy was taking pictures. Thank goodness we had them there! We then loaded her up in her car seat for the ride home. Once we got home my mom, Steve, Mindy, Kyle and the kids were here waiting for us. Mindy had decorated outside with balloons and it’s a girl signs! Devin and Kathy also followed us home and got footage of Karlee being taking into her home for the first time! It was so wonderful having all of the family support!

After everyone left…we just sat and stared at her. Taking everything in! It is truly a night that neither of us will ever forget!

Below are some pictures and scrapbook pages from that night...

Just bring us our baby...would ya!!!!
